25 Roster Spots Doesn’t Mean 25 Scholarships-8/21/26

Friday 8/21/26

At D1 schools subject to the House settlement roster rules, softball has a 25-player roster limit, and the old sport-specific scholarship maximum has been removed. That means participating schools may provide scholarships to athletes throughout that roster—but it does not require every program to give 25 full scholarships.

25 ROSTER SPOTS ≠ 25 FULL SCHOLARSHIPS

The scholarship rules changed—but that doesn’t mean every D1 softball player is getting a full ride.

AG2C takeaway: Families need to ask about the total financial package, not simply, “Do you offer softball scholarships?” Athletic aid can be only one component alongside academic scholarships, grants and other financial aid.

D2 Could Be Getting Transfer Windows

Wednesday 8/19/26

The NCAA Division II Management Council has requested feedback on whether transfer windows should be established for Division II sports and, if so, when those windows should occur. D2 currently is considering significant changes as it aligns portions of its eligibility structure with Division I.

TRANSFER RULES COULD BE CHANGING IN D2
Why should a high school recruit care about the transfer portal? Because transfers and freshmen may be competing for the same roster opportunities.
When talking with coaches, recruits should start asking more specific questions:
How many players are returning? How many freshmen are you recruiting? Are you planning to add transfers at my position?
AG2C takeaway: That teaches athletes to evaluate an actual roster opportunity, not just whether a coach says they’re interested.

September 1st Has a New Start Time: 1 P.M. Central

Wednesday 8/19/26

The NCAA adopted a softball-specific rule establishing 1 p.m. Central on September 1 of the athlete’s junior year as the beginning of permissible D1 correspondence, phone calls, off-campus contacts and other specified recruiting activities. The NCAA’s stated rationale was to eliminate the incentive for coaches to contact prospects during overnight/early-morning hours.
AG2C takeaway: Class of 2028: D1 recruiting opens at 1 p.m. Central. Will coaches already know who you are?
Don’t wait for September 1 to start recruiting. Build the profile, send introductory emails, get video online and identify target schools now.
